Hand tools / BUYING GUIDE

Hand tools: choose the sizes and formats your jobs need.

A large tool set can be useful, but its headline piece count tells you little about whether the important sizes are included. Begin with the fasteners, materials and access involved in your own jobs, then compare the contents of suitable sets.

THE BUYING DECISION

Match the tool profile, dimensions, reach and documented application to the task. Compare the useful contents of a set rather than its total piece count.

Build a job list first

Write down the recurring jobs you want the tools to cover. Note fastener dimensions and profiles, the available access and any measurement needs. Separate tools you need now from interesting additions you might never use. This makes it easier to compare a small relevant set with a large assortment. The aim is a useful collection you can identify and maintain, rather than the longest contents list at the lowest advertised price.

Compare the actual contents

STANLEY groups hand tools into distinct families including sockets, screwdrivers, keys, pliers, measuring tools and workholding. Use these families to organise your comparison, not as evidence that one manufacturer's set is right for every task. List the sizes, drive formats and accessories included in each candidate. Check whether extensions, adapters and repeated bits account for much of a headline piece count. Identify what you would still need to buy separately.

Read the application limits

Check the exact tool's instructions and specification before deciding it is suitable. For cutters, establish the stated material and cutting limits; for workholding, check the dimensions and intended use. Do not infer electrical protection from handle colour or a comfortable grip. If your task requires a certified specialist tool, verify the actual product documentation rather than treating an ordinary general-purpose set as an alternative. This guide is a buying framework, not permission to attempt unfamiliar work.

Choose the right format

For sockets and ratchets, record the required drive format and fastener dimensions. For screwdrivers and keys, record the exact recess profile and size. Reach and space can be as important as having the right nominal size. Where a job has a specified tightening requirement, the assembly documentation governs the method and tool requirement. A listing for a torque wrench needs enough information about its range, units and calibration arrangements to make an informed purchase.

Allow for keeping the set useful

Compare storage, identification markings and the availability of replacement pieces. A case that makes missing sizes obvious can help keep a set usable. Review the manufacturer's care and inspection instructions and the seller's returns information. The delivered set should match the recorded contents, with no unexplained substitutions. If your needs are modest, a few clearly specified tools may make a better starting point than a case filled with accessories you cannot identify.
