Maintenance / BUYING GUIDE

Threadlocker: buy the strength you can service later.

Choosing threadlocker by bottle colour alone is a shortcut with an expensive possible ending: a fastener that cannot be removed as intended. Selection starts with the assembly, materials and maintenance requirement, not with the strongest product on the shelf.

THE BUYING DECISION

Check the specified product, fastener materials, strength requirement and future disassembly method. A medium-strength metal threadlocker can suit some serviceable assemblies; it is not a universal recommendation for every threaded joint.

Start with the assembly requirement

If the equipment manufacturer specifies a particular compound or assembly procedure, follow it. Do not replace a locking device, sealing method or torque procedure with a general threadlocker simply because a bottle is available. For an ordinary hobby project without a specified product, identify the fastener materials, dimensions and whether future disassembly is expected before comparing technical data.

Treat removability as a buying criterion

Henkel describes LOCTITE 243 as a medium-strength threadlocker for metal fasteners that can be disassembled with ordinary hand tools. That is a defined product characteristic, not a promise about every assembly or condition. Other strengths and technologies exist for different requirements. A product selected for a permanent assembly may be inconvenient for a part you expect to service regularly.

Read the technical data, not just the colour

Colours can help identify products within a manufacturer’s range, but they are not a substitute for the exact product reference. Check substrate compatibility, application instructions, curing information and service limits for that reference. Metal threadlocking chemistry should not be assumed suitable for plastics. If the technical information does not cover your material or joint, ask the manufacturer rather than filling the gap with an internet rule of thumb.

Choose a realistic bottle size

For occasional projects, a large container may provide little practical benefit. Compare the quantity you expect to use with the storage and shelf-life information. Keep the bottle labelled, close it as instructed and retain the product data. Check that a marketplace listing identifies the exact variant and quantity; a product-range photograph can show several items that are not all included in the selected option.

Keep the purchase separate from the operating procedure

This guide does not supply a universal application quantity, curing time or tightening torque. Those depend on the product and assembly conditions. Use the current technical data and relevant equipment instructions. Do not use generic threadlocker advice to modify brake, lifting, structural, pressure or other safety-critical assemblies. The most useful purchase is a traceable, appropriately specified product whose limitations you understand before opening it.
