Cleaning / BUYING GUIDE

Workshop roll, wipes or reusable cloths? Compare the mess, not the roll count.

Cleaning supplies are easy to compare badly. Two rolls can contain very different amounts of material, while a large tub of wipes may solve a different problem from a dry paper roll. Start with what you are cleaning and where the waste will go.

THE BUYING DECISION

Separate dry wiping, liquid absorption, surface cleaning and hand cleaning. Choose products documented for the job, and compare usable sheet area or quantity rather than relying on the size of the outer pack.

Split up the cleaning tasks

A dry paper roll can be useful for straightforward wiping and drying, but it is not a substitute for a specified chemical-cleaning process. Pre-moistened wipes should be checked for the surfaces they can touch and the substances they contain. Reusable cloths make sense only when their cleaning and storage can be managed appropriately. Do not buy a single ‘workshop wipe’ and assume it covers hands, electrical equipment and every finished surface.

Read the units behind the pack size

For paper products, compare sheet dimensions, number of sheets and ply alongside the intended use. If one listing gives roll length and another gives sheet count, convert them to a common basis where the dimensions are available. A lower price per roll is not meaningful when the rolls contain different quantities. Use our pack-value tool only after deciding that the products are genuinely comparable.

Keep skin cleaning separate

HSE advises against aggressive cleaners or solvents for cleaning skin, and stresses appropriate cleaning and drying. Use a product specifically intended for skin where required, and follow its instructions. A wipe that removes grease from a machine is not automatically a hand wipe. If repeated cleaning causes irritation or cracking, stop guessing at stronger products and seek suitable advice.

Plan the used-material side of the job

Think about what contaminates the paper or cloth, not just what it was made from when new. Follow the cleaning product’s instructions and the applicable waste guidance. Do not put solvent- or oil-contaminated material into an unsuitable container or assume it belongs in ordinary recycling. If a product or substance needs specialist handling, organise that before starting the cleaning job.

Buy for your real rate of use

A small, clearly identified supply can be more sensible than a bulky pack that gets damp, dirty or mixed with other materials. Keep clean supplies protected and separate from used wipes. Compare delivery cost and storage space as well as unit price. For a home workshop, a modest range of correctly chosen dry wipes, appropriate surface cleaner and suitable hand-cleaning supplies is usually easier to manage than an unplanned pile of near-duplicate products.
