Oils & lubricants / BUYING GUIDE

Oils and greases: buy to the equipment specification.

An oil name and a large container are not enough to make a good comparison. Start with the equipment model, its maintenance instructions and the exact fluid requirement. Treat retailer searches as a way to locate candidates after that requirement is known.

THE BUYING DECISION

Match the specified fluid type, viscosity and approvals to the exact product data. Check compatibility before a change or top-up; do not assume oils or greases can be mixed.

Write down the requirement

Record the machine model and the maintenance instruction that identifies its lubricant. Include the specified fluid type, grade and approvals, plus any operating conditions stated in the manual. If the requirement is missing, ask the equipment supplier before choosing a substitute. A product described as general purpose is not proof of suitability for a compressor, hydraulic system or bearing. Your shopping list should describe the required specification rather than only the container size.

Use the right documents

Mobil provides routes to product data sheets, safety data sheets and equipment-based lubricant recommendations. These documents answer different questions: product data describes a formulation and its stated performance, while safety information addresses handling and hazards. Read the current documents for the actual product offered. A reference to one manufacturer's guidance is not an endorsement of every similarly named product returned by an Amazon search.

Resolve compatibility before buying

Mobil warns that mixing different greases can cause incompatibility and identifies particular oils with material or mixing restrictions. Do not decide compatibility from colour or from a shared marketing description. Ask the equipment or lubricant manufacturer to confirm any proposed change, including the process needed to change products. This guide does not provide flushing, dilution or maintenance procedures; follow the exact technical instructions for your equipment and product.

Compare the usable pack

Once the specification is settled, compare container quantity, delivery charge, dispensing arrangement and how much you expect to use. A large drum may be inconvenient if your storage and dispensing arrangements were planned around a small sealed bottle. Read storage and shelf-life guidance and keep the product identifiable. Count the accessories needed to handle the pack when comparing the full cost, rather than treating the liquid price as the whole purchase.

Check the supplied variant

Before ordering, record the exact product name, grade and container size alongside the seller details. Compare the delivered label with your recorded requirement before use. Do not infer an approval from a photograph of another grade in the same family. For cutting fluids, distinguish the product's stated application and whether the supplied format requires preparation under its instructions. For chains, check which chain and equipment application the product actually covers.
